Dr. Preethi R., Dr. Doddamani S. A., Dr. Surekha S. Medikeri

ABSTRACT

Kashtartava is a common symptom in various yonivyapads mentioned in our classics. A systematic review of studies in developing countries has revealed that about 25-50% of adult women and 75% of adolescents experience pain during menstruation with 5-20% reporting severe dysmenorrhea.[1] In conventional systems, drug therapy includes Prostaglandin Synthetase Inhibitors for pain management, but has got adverse effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea etc.[2] Our ancient references say that pain is an indication of vata vikriti ‘na hi vaata drite soolam.[3] Vitiated apana vata is considered as the primary cause for yoni vikara. Hence snehana is the first line of treatment in vata vikaras. Hingwadi taila[4] is a herbo-mineral preparation used internally in the management of kastatava. As we know taila is non palatable and poses certain inconvenience in patients for internal usage it was converted into softgel capules and given internally. A clinical trial was carried out on 20 patients diagnosed with kashtartava aged between 15 to 35 yearsand treatment was given 1 week prior to cycle upto 3 months in a dose of 2 tid capsules with hot water. Assessment was done on 5th day of each menstrual cycle for three consecutive months. Study shows there was significant reduction in pain and formation of clots during menstraul cycle.
