ABSTRACT
Background:– Blood, a precious commodity crucial for transfusion therapy in health care setups causes transfusion transmitted diseases in recipients. Screening reduces its incidence as seropositive units are discarded. Recruitment of safe donor minimizes seropositive blood wastage. Objective:– To analyze seroprevalence in donors and relate to blood discard patterns. Materials and Methods:– The retrospective analyzed data retrieved from screening, donor, discard records from January 2013 to December 2019 in KIMS Hospital Blood Bank, Bengaluru. Results:– 40983, 3238(8%) voluntary and 37749(92%) replacement donations noted. 4524 (11%) units discarded, 642 (1.5%) were seropositive. An increased seroprevalence was associated with decreased voluntary donation in 2013, 2015 and vice versa in 2019.
Conclusion:– The incidence of TTI is related to voluntary donation and impacts blood wastage. Expansion of voluntary donor pool, donor screening and education ensures safe transfusion, minimizes blood wastage.
