SHODHANA: AN IMPORTANT STEP IN GUGGUL FORMULATION

ABSTRACT
Guggul is a versatile Ayurvedic drug that is widely used in Ayurveda since ancient times in large group of diseases. Guggul is an oleo-gum resin part of the plant which is very sticky in nature, so it attracts lots of dust, dry leaves & other foreign material etc.[1] and gets contaminated very easily and quickly. Also, In raw form, it has more Tikshna, Ushna & Ruksha properties and if consumed without shodhana, it may cause harmful effects such as skin rashes, diarrhea, nausea, irregular mensuration and headache Hence, shodhana is very important step to eradicate all the physical and chemical blemishes present in guggul and convert it into a biologically efficacious drug which can be used internally without any side effects. Though scattered, classics have given different methods and medias for Guggul Shodhana. The present works compiles different Guggul shodhana methods and emphasis the importance of Shodhan in Guggul formulation.
