CRITICAL REVIEW OF MANASHILA (REALGAR)

ABSTRACT
Manahshila (realgar, arsenic disulphide) has been used in Ayurvedic medicine since ancient times for the treatment of conditions such as skin diseases, cough, asthma, certain eye diseases, and psychological disorders etc. As per modern science Arsenic is a toxic substance when it is in compound form. Manashila is called as red arsenic with two molecules of Arsenic and two molecules of Sulphur As2S2 Manashila consumed without proper Shodhana causes Mandagni, Malabaddata, Ashmari and Mutra Krichra. Hence Shodhana of Manashila is essential. Shodhana is the process of removal of physical, chemical
impurities and potentiating of the drugs. Manahshila has significant therapeutic values which have been mentioned in Brihatrayi and Bhaishajya Ratnavali. The most of the formulation of Manahshila is used for external application, whereas fine powders of these processed minerals are used for both in external and internal applications. Certain Dhuma Yoga also contain Manahshila are advised in respiratory tract diseases. Shuddha Manahshila has been described in various Rasa Yoga preparations such as Shvasakuthara Rasa, Rajamriganka Rasa, Trailokyachintamani Rasa, Shilasindura, and Samirapannaga Rasa. There are three types of Manashila like Shyamangi, Kanaveeraka and Khandakya, which are superior in increasing order. So Khandakya is superior most and which also yields more Satva. There are different medias explained in literature for Shodhana of Manashila. According to the media of purification the quality and pharmacological properties of Manashila will vary. Depending on the change in properties the therapeutic effect may also vary.
