Abstract

TRANSDERMAL DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM: HISTORY, DEVELOPMENT AND CURRENT APPROACHES TO TOPICAL NON-INVASIVE DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM

Deepika Joshi, Manish Tiwari*, Bhavana Singh and Nidhi Semwal

ABSTRACT

Among the various other route such as buccal/sublingual, intranasal, and pulmonary; topical transdermal approach is the most promising non-invasive drug delivery route. Over the past few years alternate routes of drug administration is a major thrust area, to approved drug products that cannot be delivered by the oral or parenteral route. Transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDS) comprises one of the major applicable topical route for new drug delivery with increased patient compliance. Since the first scopolamine transdermal patch was approved for motion sickness by the USFDA in 1979; TDDS is preferred as alternative to oral drug delivery and injections. The review has been analysed for the history, development and formulation approaches of transdermal patches along with its targeted delivery by transdermal patches. The review provide the deep sight knowledge of structure of skin, rationale for drug selection, formulation approaches for preparation of transdermal patches emphasing on treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. The study design is based on updating the international and national literatures to provide exhaustive knowledge about history, development and formulation of TDDS. The study complied various patented documents for the TDDS (US10836774B2, US10172959B2) to provide information in the state of technological innovation in terms of research and development. The review will attract the interest of academics, researchers, students and pharmaceutical companies in the recent on-going activities in transdermal drug delivery system for various disorders with detailed insight through its history, formulation and evaluation parameters.
