MUCOADHESIVE DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM: A REVIEW
Vikas Singh* and Pallavi Joshi
ABSTRACT
Improvement of drug actions by the development of new drug delivery system. Like mucoadhesive system. Mucoadhesive also known as adhesion between two materials. The mucoadhesive molecules and mucus glycoproteins mutually interact by means of interpenetration of their chains and the forming of secondary semi- permanent adhesive bonds. In this system interaction of mucus layer and mucoadhesive polymers, resulting in increase the residence time of drug molecule at site of absorption. Mucoadhesive system leading improvement in both systemic and local action. Increased duration time of drug in gastrointestinal lead to maximum absorption as well as increase bioavailability. This review contents mode of action of mucoadhesion,
theories of mucoadhesion, factors affecting, different dosage form etc.
Keywords: Mucoadhesive, Adhesion theory, Mechanism of mucoadhesion, Advantage, Disadvantage, Mucus, Mucoadhesive dosage forms.
