ABSTRACT
In vitro evaluation of three medicinal plants viz., Ficus microcarpa L., Antidesma acidum Retz., and Valeriana hardwickii Wall. against three bacterial species Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus tested at 10, 20, 30 40 and 50 microliter concentration. F. microcarpa recorded a maximum inhibition of 34.0mm at 50 μl concentration against S. aureus. 26.0 μl against B. subtilis at 50 μl concentration and 20.0mm against E. coli. V. hardwickii recorded a significant activity and showed 24.0 mm, 20.0 and 12.00mm inhibition against B. subtilis , E. coli and S. aureus respectively tested at 50 μl concentration. Compared to synthetic antibiotic chloramphenicol tested at 25mg concentration, significant activity was observed against all the test bacteria and recorded 18.0mm to 31.0mm inhibition.
Keywords: Ficus microcarpa , Antidesma acidum , Valeriana hardwickii, antibacterial activity, synthetic antibiotic.
