HYSSOPUS OFFICINALIS LINN. (JUPHA): A REVIEW BASED ON PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVITY

ABSTRACT
Hyssopus officinalis Linn. is one of the significant herbal plant with different therapeutic medicinal properties. Hyssopus officinalis Linn. is a potential medium sized-plant also known as „Jupha‟ and „Hyssop‟. It is widely distributed in Mediterranean area, Southern Europe and Caspian Sea. This plant is mostly cultivated around sea, riverbanks and roadside. The plant has been traditionally used for medicinal purposes. The therapeutic uses and pharmacological activities of Hyssopus officinalis are mostly based on folklore rather than scientific experiments. Hyssopus officinalis Linn. is a purifying herb, relieves catarrh and reduces mucus secretion. Traditionally the leaves, seeds and whole plant were utilized in the treatment of many ailments. There are various phytochemicals isolated from Hyssopus officinalis Linn. plant that include several polyphenolic compounds, flavonoids, apigenin, quercetin, diosmin, luteolin and glucosides. Various therapeutic uses of Hyssopus officinalis Linn. are antimicrobial, antiviral, antiplatelet, antioxidant, anti-leishmanial, antidiabetic, antimuscarinic and others. The present review article reveals the overall ayurvedic and modern pharmacological information on Hyssopus officinalis Linn. With various reported ayurvedic literature and scientific pharmacological studies.
