ABSTRACT
Glaucoma is a main cause of blindness all over the world. Measuring the intraocular pressure (IOP) is an important examination skill done by the ophthalmologist to diagnose and monitor the progression of glaucoma. IOP depend mainly on the equilibrium between the aqueous humor secretion from the processes of the ciliary body in the posterior chamber of the eye and the drainage in the anterior chamber angle and the uveoscleral route. Elevated IOP is believed to be mainly due defects in the drainage rather than the secretion. The aim of this study is to review aqueous humor, IOP, tonometry and to study the effect of gender and age on measuring the IOP with the use of Goldmann applanation tonometer for 125 males and 125 females. Each gender group was classified into 4 age group. The study showed that there is
no effect of gender on measuring IOP in the same age group while there is slight increase in the IOP with increasing age in both gender group.
