ABSTRACT
The therapeutic action of the drugs can be improved by a new drug delivery system, such as a mucoadhesive system. Mucoadhesive drug delivery systems are delivery systems that utilize the property of bioadhesion of certain polymers which become adhesive on hydration and hence can be used for targeting a drug to a particular region of the body for longer periods. The term bioadhesion is used to describe the adhesion between polymers, either synthetic or natural, and soft tissues or the gastrointestinal mucosa. In cases where the bond is formed with the mucus, the term mucoadhesion may be used synonymously with bioadhesion. Mucoadhesive drug delivery systems with their numerous benefits have a lot of potential in formulating dosage forms for various
chronic diseases. Since, the last four decades, the concept of Mucoadhesion has achieved a most valuable interest in the various fields of pharmaceutics. There are many advantages of the mucoadhesive buccal drug delivery system that made this a novel drug delivery system for the local as well as systemic delivery of various drugs. This review article aims to provide an overview of the various aspects of mucoadhesion, mucoadhesive materials, factors affecting mucoadhesion, evaluating methods, and finally various mucoadhesive drug delivery systems.
