ABSTRACT
Background: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is a common condition seen in pregnancy which is generally associated with microcytic anaemia and thrombocytosis. Thrombocytopenia is a rare occurrence to be associated with IDA. In some patients, thrombocytopenia may develop secondary to iron supplementation. Case description: A 25 year old pregnant female with history of 8 months of amenorrhoea (G2P2A0L1) with IDA was prescribed with Iron sucrose injections. She developed asymptomatic thrombocytopenia which was detected in a routine screening haemogram done 20 days after iron therapy and was referred to our hospital for further management. She was managed
with intravenous platelet concentrate and packed red blood cell transfusion. Conclusion: This case shows a rare finding in IDA seen during pregnancy. Severe IDA may be associated with thrombocytopenia but iron sucrose infusion can also cause thrombocytopenia.
