AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF DIABETIC PERIODONTITIS- A SINGLE CASE REPORT

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Diabetes and periodontitis are common chronic diseases in the world. Abundant epidemiological evidence implies a bidirectional relationship between these two diseases. Diabetes mellitus is recognized as an important risk factor for severe and progressive periodontitis infection or lesion resulting in destruction of tissue and supporting bone that forms attachment around the tooth. Periodontal disease has been reported as the 6thcomplication of diabetes mellitus. Materials and Methods: A 45 year old male patient approached Shalakya Tantra OPD of SJIIM, Bengaluru complaining of bleeding gums, bad breath, pain in gums & mobile tooth since 4 months, the subject was systemically reviewed, he had a history of
Diabetes Mellitus type 2 since 15 yrs with poor glycaemic control and subject was diagnosed as Diabetic periodontitis, he was administered with Kavala, Gandoosha, Pratisarana and internal medication for a period of 1 and a half month. Result: The subject showed marked improvement in assessment criteria’s and his glycaemic level came under control. Discussion: In Ayurveda priority is given for treating the root cause of the disease. Thus here we have tried to control the diabetes first, which has lead to eventual improvement of the condition, also gandoosha and pratisarana plays a major role in treating Mukha roga.
