ABSTRACT
Celastrus paniculatus, also known as Jyotishmati or black oil plant, is a herbal plant that has been used extensively in the treatment of a variety of health conditions in traditional medicine. Celastrus paniculatus is a member of the Celastraceae family and is commonly known as Jyotishmati or black oil plant. It is a small to medium sized woody species which is native to India and also widely distributed across countries like Malaysia, Thailand, China, Philippines, North eastern part of Australia. The present study aimed to determine the possible phytocomponents present in the ethanolic extract of Celastrus paniculatus leaves using GC-MS analysis. Celastrus paniculatus leaves were dried pulverised and extracted with ethanol using a soxhlet apparatus. Phytocomponents in the ethanolic extract revealed the
presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, volatile oil, flavonoids, glycosides, tannins, steroids and triterpenoids. GC-MS analysis shows the identified compounds of leaves of Celastrus paniculatus, their retention indices, percentage composition, chemical structure and activities. The results showed the presence of three different phytochemical compounds i.e., 3, 6, 9- Trioxa – 2 – silaundecane, 2-2-dimethyl-, 3, 6, 9- Trioxa – 2 – silaundecane, 2-2-dimethyl- and Squalene. The spectrum profile of GC-MS confirmed the presence of major components.
Keywords: Celastrus paniculatus, GC-MS analysis.
