ABSTRACT
Objective Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic progressive degenerative disease of weight bearing joints and leading cause of disability in elderly. Current medical management of OA is mostly with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) being the main stray of therapy. The main aim of the study is to estimate the effectiveness of naproxen and etodolac in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. Materials and methods The efficacy and safety of etodolac and naproxen were compared in a double blind randomized, parallel group out patient study conducts in 100 patients of OA of knee joint diagnosed according to American college of rheumatology criteria. after obtaining the informed consent the subjects were randomized into two
groups: those who has etodolac 400mg b.i.d. d (n=50) and those who Had naproxen 500 mg b.i.d. d (n=50). the data were tabulated and analysed using paired a t test and coefficient of variation and significance was determined by its P value. Results Among 100 patients 32 subjects were males (32%) ,68 subjects were females (68%). after 3 weeks of treatment, pain intensity and functional indices in terms of visual analogue scale (VAS) and western Ontario and McMaster universities osteoarthritis (WOMAC) score were significantly better in etodolac as compared to naproxen along with less rate of side effects Conclusion It was concluded that etodolac was more effective and better tolerated NSAID than naproxen for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis.
