ABSTRACT
The present research work provides a novel method to estimate spectrophotometrically, the piroxicam drug, in tablet formulations without the use of organic solvent. In the investigation, an attempt was made to show that solids can also be wisely used for forbidding organic solvents. The main objective of the present study is to demonstrate the solvency of solid. In the present study, a co-melt (resorcinol and dimethyl urea) obtained by melting resorcinol and dimethyl urea in the ratio of 4:1 on weight basis to extract (Dissolve) piroxicam from fine powder of tablets. Distilled water was used for
dilution purpose to carry out spectrophotometric estimation at 358 nm without utilizing any organic solvent. Proposed spectrophotometric analytical method is novel, rapid, free from toxicity of organic solvent, accurate and reproducible. The recovery studies and statistical data confirmed the accuracy. Resorcinol, di-methyl urea and the tablet excipients did not interfere in the spectrophotometric estimation at 358 nm.
Keywords: Mixed-solvency concept, piroxicam, dimethyl urea, resorcinol spectrophotometric analysis, co-melt.
