ANTIDEPRESSANT ACTIVITY OF UNMAD GAJKESARI RASA (DIFFERENT FORMULATIONS) W.S.R. TO DEPRESSION (AVASAD) - A CRITICAL REVIEW

ABSTRACT

Depression is a medical disorder of the brain that affects feeling, thoughts, behavior and physical health of person. The World Health Organization (WHO) figures reveal that currently over 450 million people in society are directly affected by mental disorder or disabilities, most of who live in developing countries. According to Ayurveda, Depression (Avasad) is a Manas vyadhi, it comes under the signs of Kaphaj Unmad. The provoked vatadi dhosh in alpa satva vyakti enters in Buddhi nivas and it further alters Manovaha strotas. Person’s chitta gets dushit and Vibhrama avastha has been developed which leads to Depression (Avasad). Ayurveda is highly effective in treating Mansik vyadhi. Thus, an attempt has been made to evaluate the probable efficacy of herbomineral formulation Unmad Gajkesari Rasa mentioned in Yogratnakar Unmad rog 27/1-3 used for treating Depression (Avasad). Aim and Objective: To study critically Anti-depressant activity of Unmad Gajkesari Rasa w.s.r. to Depression (Avasad). Material and Methods: The Ayurvedic classics, research articles, online journals are thoroughly reviewed to compile relevant and scientific data about Unmad Gajkesari Rasa its ingredients and Depression (Avasad). Observation and Result: The review of Ayurvedic classics, research articles, online journals have proved the anti-psychotic, sedative, hypnotic and anti-depressant activity of the ingredients of Unmad Gajkesari Rasa. Conclusion: Unmad Gajkesari Rasa is a herbomineral formulation. This review presents collective knowledge of its pharmacological, therapeutic action and probable anti-psychotic, sedative hypnotic activity and anti-depressant effect. Thus, Unmad Gajkesari Rasa can be safely prescribed to the patients suffering from Depression (Avasad).
