ABSTRACT
The main objective of the study was to develop a topical gel Ocimum basilicum for the treatment of acne vulgaris. The gel was formulated using various gelling agents like Hydroxy Propyl Methylcellulose (HPMC), Sodium Carboxy MethylCellulose (Na CMC), carbopol, ethylcellulose and sodium alginate. The prepared gels were evaluated for various physico-chemical parameters like pH, spreadability, viscosity, microbial activity and in-vitro diffusion study. Based on these studies, F3 was selected as best formulation from the in-vitro diffusion study and it showed best percentage cumulative drug release at the end of 12hrs. The microbial activity of optimized formulations
was showed better inhibitory activity against P.aeruginosa using gentamycin as reference.
Keywords: Ocimum Basilicum, Topical gel, Antimicrobial activity.
