ABSTRACT
Nerium olender belongs to family Apocyanaceae and Punica Granatum
belongs to family Lythraceae. The objective of the present work was
to identify the phytochemical constituents and to compare the in vitro
anthelmintic potency of the aqueous and ethanolic extract of Nerium
olender flower and Punica Granatum peel and seed in 1:1 ratio using
Indian earthworms (Pheretima posthumad). The various concentrations
( 25, 50, 75 & 100mg/ml) of the aqueous and ethanolic extract were
tested in vitro for anthelmintic potency by determination of time of
paralysis and time of death of worm. Albendazole (25mg/ml) used as
standard. The result of present study indicates ethanolic extract of
Nerium olender and Punica Granatum paralyze earthworm and also caused its death after
some time. Thus, the present study indicates that Nerium olender and Punica Granatum are
anthelmintic and Nerium olender has more anthelmintic activity with compare to Punica
Granatum. The phytochemical investigation of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of flower of
Nerium olender showed the presence of active chemical constituents such as Carbohydrates,
Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Steroids, Cardiac Glycosides, Anthraquinone Glycosides, Proteins,
Amino Acids, Triterpenoids and Tannins while that of Punica granatum peel and seed show
presence of alkaloids, tannins, flavanoids, steroids, , cardiac glycosides and terpenoids.
