ABSTRACT

Green synthesis is a simple, safe and environment friendly method to produce nanoparticles when compared to other synthesis techniques. Iron oxide Nanoparticles (IONPs) with desired surface chemistry has numerous in vivo applications. Recently plant-based Iron oxide nanoparticles synthesis technique i.e., green approach is extremely promising method because of its non-toxicity, stability and environmentally friendly behaviour of produced nanoparticles. Biosynthesized nanoparticles have high demand in the medical field. In this study we focused on the green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticle from Vitex leucoxylon. V. leucoxylon is a medicinal plant, its roots and leaf are accounted for to have therapeutic properties like soothing cerebral pain, headache, fever, catarrh etc. However, there is no scientific reports on the use of V. leucoxylon leaves for the synthesis of IONPs, hence in the present study we have made an attempt to synthesize IONPs using V. leucoxylon and also evaluated the pharmacological properties of synthesized IONPs. Green synthesized IONPs were subjected to various characterization techniques such as UV-VIS Spec., SEM, EDX and FTIR. The results revealed that newly synthesized nanoparticles have size of 45-100nm diameter range. We can say that Plant phytochemicals not only helps in reducing metal ions and also helps in capping and stabilizing of the IONPs. IONPs cytotoxicity towards yeast cell and NIH 3T3 human cell line was studied. Antioxidant property of these IONPS were done through DPPH and FRAP assay. Anticancer activity through MTT assay revealed that the IONPs shows clear cytotoxic effect against MCF-7 Breast cancer cell line. This tells us that green synthesized IONPs are helpful in treating the cancer cell line were in the IONPs inhibit the tumour cell growth. Green synthesized IONPs can be used in cancer treatment.
