ORGANIC LIP BALMS: A MINI REVIEW

ABSTRACT

Lip balm is a lip care product which is used for protection of lips from drying, peeling, flaking and cracking. Organic lip balms not only help to nourish the lips and protect lips from chapping and dryness but it also helps in keeping lips hydrated, such balms help to protect the natural beauty of the lips. The lip care products for everyday use may contain heavy metals and preservatives; these heavy metals and chemicals can be accidently ingested and may cause serious problems. Few of them are lead, cadmium and chromium. Lead affects brain and heart; chromium may cause cancer. To minimize these harmful effects of such products that are used in lip balms, consumers are opting for organic based product cosmetics because it is safe to use and Environmentally friendly. Recent studies show the use of products like ghee, honey, beeswax, sheabutter, oils, colorant and flavors in formulation of organic lip balms. Honey is used as hydrating agent to increase the moisture content in the lip balms. This review article is focused on various organic materials that act as essential ingredients in formulation of organic lip balm.
