METFORMIN INDUCED VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY AMONG TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS

ABSTRACT
Metformin is a widely prescribed drug for treating type 2 diabetes a disease in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood. Metformin is often the first medication that will be prescribed to people with type 2 diabetes. Metformin helps to lower blood glucose levels by reducing the amount of glucose produced and released by the liver, and by increasing insulin sensitivity.Particularly on long term use and use in higher dose of metformin therapy leads to Vitamin B12 deficiency and anemia. The prevalence is increased with increase in dose and duration
of metformin use. This review article offers the of vitamin B12 deficiency in diabetic patients with metformin therapy.
