AN OBSERVATIONAL CLINICAL STUDY ON STHOULYA W.S.R. TO OBESITY

ABSTRACT
Obesity is defined as an abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that pose a risk to health. Obesity has increased at an alarming rate in recent years and has become one of the major health hazards globally. It is considered as a lifestyle disorder in which a complex interplay of genetic, environmental and psychological factors play a major role, especially primary obesity wherein no obvious cause exists other than an imbalance in energy intake and expenditure. Sthoulya comes under the category of Santarpanottha Vyadhi (An excess nutritional disorder) as well as in Medopradoshaja Vikara in Charaka Samhita and as Rasa-Nimittaja Vikara in Sushruta Samhita. As per the latest statistics of WHO (March 2011) there are 1.6 Billion adults who are overweight (BMI>25) and more than 400 million people who are obese (BMI >30). This study was designed to assess the Nidanas of Sthoulya through as observational approach.
