ABSTRACT
The present review on floating microspheres mainly focuses on the principle of mechanism of floatation to achieve gastric retention. Floating microspheres are specially gaining attention due to their wider applicability on the drugs targeting stomach. Floating microspheres (Hollow Microspheres) are a type of gastro-retentive drug delivery systems based on non effervescent approach. They are spherical empty particles without core and are free flowing powders that have sufficient buoyancy to float over gastric contents and remain in stomach for prolonged period. The review summarizes the polymers used, evaluation parameters and applications. These systems are useful to overcome several problems encountered during the development of a pharmaceutical dosage form.
Keywords: Floating microspheres, hollow microspheres, gastric retention, polymers.
