ABSTRACT
Alzheimer's disease is one of the most death-dealing brain disorders of aged humans. In the past decades, a steady increasing effort for discovering the etiology of the disease and developing pharmacological treatment are noticed. It is the sixth leading cause of death and the most common cause of dementia all over world. It is characterized by progressive cognitive impairment together with declining activities of daily living and behavioural changes. Mild cognitive impairment may increase risk of later developing dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease or other neurological disorders. The clinical symptoms of Alzheimer disease (AD) is dementia that typically begins with indefinite and poor recognizable failure of memory and slowly becomes more severe and, eventually, it prevents from functioning in a normal way. Currently available treatments i.e. acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (rivastigmine, galantamine, donepezil) and N-methyl d-aspartate receptor antagonist (memantine) contribute minimum effect on the disease and target late aspects of the disease. Understanding the stretch of Alzheimer disease related knowledge can assist disease management that result in improved disease management. This article attempts to focus on some of the important recent developments inconception and management of Alzheimer disease.
Keywords: Alzheimer disease (AD), dementia, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, neurological disorders, N-methyl d-aspartate receptor.
