ABSTRACT
Diabetes mellitus is a condition where there are defects in insulin secretion and its action, which leads to chronic hyperglycemia and abnormalities in carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolisms. As per the World Health Organization report, the prevalence of diabetes in India was found to be 7.8. Discovery of insulin in 1921 made drastic improvement in the antidiabetic therapy for the diabetic patients. Over century insulin preparation has attained greater advancements as improving its duration of action as well as rapid activity for better control of blood sugar level. Even the insulin delivery systems also improved widely which has a very good impact on patients better adherence as well as the blood glucose control. The closed loop continuous insulin pump devices provide promising effects on better glucose control by releasing the proper amount of insulin to the circulation as per the periodic monitoring system. Even after a century later insulin retains its important role in the efficient control of blood sugar level in the diabetes mellitus patients. Incorporation of technology in the therapy gives more positive effects of the better outcome in the blood glucose control among diabetic patients.
