A REVIEW ON PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVTIES OF ESSENTIAL OIL IN HYSSOPUS OFFICINALIS

ABSTRACT
Hyssopus Officinalis (Hyssop) is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae). It is a bushy perennial herb. Native to southern Europe, the Middle East, central Asia, and parts of China. The Essential oil is made from flowers and leaves of the plant. Essential oil of hyssopus officinalis shows a wide range of pharmacological activities, like muscle relaxant, insecticidal, allelopathic activities. It also alleviates asthma and respiratory symptoms. Flowers and leaves are edible, usually used in salads, pasta and summer soup. Flowers can be used as a decorative garnish on dishes. Hyssop was mentioned in bible for its cleansing effect in connection with plague, leprosy and chest ailments and symbolically in cleansing the soul. The Essential oil of hyssopus officinalis possess antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity,
antimicrobial property, antifungal property. In this review an attempt has been made to give a lime light on various pharmacological activities performed with the Essential oil of hyssopus officinalis viz, anti-oxidant antimicrobial, spasmolytic, anti-inflammatory and other effects.
