*Simran and Dr. Anumalagundam Srikanth

ABSTRACT

Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most challenging diseases among the world. It is a metabolic and chronic disorder that mainly causes hyperglycaemia which is a common outcome for both T1DM (insulin deficiency) & T2DM (insulin resistance). Here, we specially discuss about T2DM. However, there are various strategies to decrease the effect of DM and its complications. Over the past several years, most of the populations rely on herbal formulations for the prevention and treatment of many diseases and also it possess several properties such as: anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-fungal e.t.c. Bioactive compounds became the hot research method that is acceptable as traditional method for the treatment of DM and it is an excellent competitor of synthetic anti-diabetic drugs because it possess least side effects, more economic as well as less expensive. In this article review, it comprehensively summarizes the bioactive compounds such as: momordica charantia, panax ginseng, allium cepa, allium sativum and more others demonstrated that it gives most promising results to cure and management of DM. As per the available data, bioactive compounds works on the mechanism by increasing secretion of insulin, prevents beta-cell dysfunction, decreases the effect of hyperglycaemia. With these highlights, the present review concluded the complete information about DM, its type, bioactive compounds and the mechanism to possess anti-diabetic activity and their future aspects and recent advances. Though, there are various bioactive compounds for which future research is necessary to increase its benefits in order to treat diseases.
