ABSTRACT
Novel drug delivery system (NDDS) has become a new approach for herbal extracts and their active constituents. It is a patented technology that was established and initiated by a leading manufacturer of herbal drugs and nutraceuticals. Phytosomes of the polyphenolic drug delivery system was prepared by a formation of a complex between phytoconstituents and phosphatidylcholine. Phytosomes are cell-like structures evolved from the stoichiometric reaction between phospholipids and standardized plant extract or polyphenolic constituents like flavonoids, xanthones, tannins, and terpenoids. The bioavailability of phytosome is increased because of their ability to cross lipid biomembrane and also protects the destruction of herbal
extracts by bacteria present in the gut and secretion of the digestive system. A better pharmacokinetic and therapeutic effect is shown by phytosomes unlike conventional extracts of plants. Very few drugs are formulated and available as phytosome in the market. Phytosome shows a low-risk profiles are also shows better stability. Polyphenolic phytoconstituents is also used in various treatments like cancer, diabetes, inflammation, hepato-toxicity, fever, and immunity problems and also used as an anti-aging for skin, analgesic. In this paper, we will discuss about the methods of preparation of phytosomes and also study about that how phytosome increase stability, bioavailability, and absorption of the poly-phenolic drug.
