ABSTRACT
Pregnancy is associated with anatomical and physiological changes, such as decreased vascular resistance, increased vascular permeability and cardiac output. These are essential to accommodate plasma volume expansion and guarantee perfusion of vital organs. Nevertheless, fluctuations in estrogen concentration can increase coagulation factors and lead, consequently, to an increased risk of thromboembolism. In these situations, elevated levels of progesterone induce vasodilation, vascular stasis and edema, which further increase the risk of thromboembolism.
