ABSTRACT
3, 4-Dihydropyrimidine-2(1H)-ones/thiones (DHPMs) are of considerable interest because of their biological and medicinal value. Biginelli reaction was the method through which DHPMS was first time synthesized from aromatic aldehyde, β-keto ester and urea under strongly acidic conditions. The main disadvantage of this method was poor yield and acidic nature of the process. Several strategies have been adopted to synthesize DHPMs to date. In this paper, we compare the yield obtained from the synthesized DHPMs by CeCl3.7H2O as a catalyst using different solvents under the same reaction conditions
except for temperature which has been set according to the boiling point of solvents. Results have been compared. Further synthesis of substituted DHPMs has been done using different substituted aldehydes under the same reaction conditions using the best solvent and CeCl3.7H2O as a catalyst. The advantage of this method is to get the best solvent, greater yield of the reaction, and milder reaction conditions.
