ABSTRACT
Nutraceuticals is a term used to describe any product derived from food sources with extra health benefits in addition to the basic nutritional value found in foods. The term nutraceuticals was coined in 1989 by Stephen Defelice, founder and chairman of the foundation for innovation in medicine, an American organization located in cranford, New jersy. The food product used as nutraceuticals can be categorized as dietary fibre, prebiotics, probiotics, polyunsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants and other different types of herbal natural foods. Nutraceuticals also been developed for treating a variety of disease like colon cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer‟s disease. Over the past few years an increasing number of dietary supplements have become available for purchase in pharmacies. In this review article, an attempt has been made to discuss all aspects of nutraceuticals introduction,
categories, classification, properties with their therapeutic benefits, their use in various disease.
