ABSTRACT
Lopinavir is a protease inhibitor and is used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Lopinavir is used exclusively in combination with ritonavir. This combination was first marketed by Abott. The combination is necessary because the lopinavir has poor oral bioavailability and extensive biotransformation. Ritonavir is a potent inhibitor of the enzymes responsible for lopinavir metabolism, and its co-administration "boosts" lopinavir exposure and improves antiviral activity. Analytical methods available for the estimation of lopinavir are presented in this review.
