ABSTRACT
Cephalosporin is a type of antibiotic that can be taken orally for a simple infection or injected into a vein (intravenous injection) for severe infection. Cephalosporin is a commonly used group of antibiotics in hospitals and healthcare facilities around the world. The objective of the study was to study the drug utilization pattern of Cephalosporin in various infectious diseases. This was a prospective and observational study that was performed on 95 patients with infectious diseases who were prescribed with Cephalosporins. 57 patients were male and 38 were female. Inj.Cefoperazone was prescribed for the 38 patients which come under the third generation of
cephalosporins. Likewise, Inj. Cefuroxime was the second most prescribed cephalosporins i.e., 20 subjects which comes under the second generation of cephalosporins. We found out that 52 subjects were on the empirical therapy whereas 43 subjects were on prophylactic therapy. 34.7% of the subject was prescribed as a prophylactic therapy to prevent the post-surgical infections. Empirical therapy was given to lower respiratory tract infections and urinary tract infections at 13.6% and 12.6% respectively. Hence, It shows that appropriate exposure to the extent, nature, and determinants of the Cephalosporin provides necessary information about the drug which is useful in assessing the rationality of prescribing of the drug. Various generation of cephalosporin was prescribed for various infections but highly prescribed was the third generation followed by the second generation cephalosporin.
