Abstract

SYZYGIUM JAMBOS: A BRIEF REVIEW

ABSTRACT

Plants have contributed mankind with herbal remedies for many diseases for many centuries and even today. They play major role in primary healthcare as therapeutic remedies in developing countries. Herbal medicines have been the bases for the treatment and cure of various diseases in traditional methods practiced such as Ayurveda, Unani and Sidha.Many studies have also shown that it protects against the radiation induced DNA damage. The succulent species of Syzygium are implanted throughout the tropics globally and the greatest species variety takes place in Malaysia and north-eastern Australia. Syzygium has a major role in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, agricultural and food industry. The genus disclose their broad range of therapeutic characteristics and have applications in various health care systems such as digestive, astringent, anti-diabetic, anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, analgesic, anti-oxidant anti hyperglycemic, gastroprotective,stomachic activity,anti-scorbutic activity, diuretic,anti genotoxicity, anti-carminative, anti-fungal and anti leishmanial activity. They are the rich source of phenols, flavonoids, tannins and phenolic compounds.
