ABSTRACT
Although endometriosis is a mild disease, it shares many characteristics with malignancy, such as invasive and unbridled growth, as well as a tendency to metastasize and recur. Epidemiological and laboratory data link endometriosis to epithelial ovarian carcinoma. In 1925, Sampson1 was the first to describe the criteria for malignancy resulting from endometriosis: 1. the presence of endometriosis and malignancy within the same ovary must be demonstrated; 2. the carcinoma must be from the endometriosis and not invade from some other source; and 3. the specimen should contain the histological features of the endometriosis (including stroma and
glands). The demonstration of morphological continuity between benign and malignant epithelium within endometriosis was added as a fourth criterion by Scott in 1953. Since then, we have accumulated a significant body of data supporting the existence of a relationship between endometriosis and cancer.
