PHYTOCHEMICAL, PHARMACOLOGICAL EVALUATION AND STANDARDIZATION OF SELECTED MEDICINAL PLANTS FOR ANTIINFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY

ABSTRACT
Cissampelos pareira, a well-known medicinal climber-plant of the Menispermaceae family, has been extensively used in the traditional medicinal system since the ancient time for the treatment of numerous diseases such as ulcer, wound, rheumatism, fever, asthma, cholera, diarrhea, inflammation, snakebite, malaria, rabies, and also recommended for blood purification. The carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model has been used to research the anti-inflammatory function of the ethanolic extract of Cissampelos pariera Linn. leaves in albino wistar rats. Carrageenan-induced rat paw edema was inhibited by the ethanolic extract of Cissampelos pariera (400 mg/kg p.o.) For its preliminary phytochemical screening and acute toxicity tests, the extract was also researched. The result suggested that, compared with the standard drug indomethacin (10 mg/kg p. o.) and untreated control, the extract induced substantial (P < 0.05) anti-inflammatory activity.
