Abstract

PANCHAMRIT – A SECRET OF SKIN CARE

ABSTRACT

Panchamrit is a sacred mixture of five ingredients (milk, curd, ghee, honey and jaggery) which is traditionally used as a prasad in Hindu poojas. The word “Panchamrita” is a combination of two words – „pancha‟ means five and „amrita‟ is a mythological beverage of immortality. The five ingredients used in panchamrit have lot of health benefits as a home remedy. It also nourishes the skin keeps it healthy. It improves complexation as it is considered as skin cleanser. It promotes growth of healthy skin cells and gives healthy glow from inside out. The ingredients of panchamrit has various skin benefits. Milk moisturizes, exfoliates and tightens the skin. Curd rejuvenates the skin, reduces skin pigmentations and produces anti-ageing effects. Jaggery reduces age spots, acne scars. Ghee produces radiance, locks the moisture and reduces dark circles. Honey acts as a bleach, emollient and unclog pores. Panchamrit has an overall antioxidant effect. Though it has so many skin benefits, but because of water it has stability issues. So, the aim of present study is to develop a skincare product from panchamrit which can be used externally with improved stability.
