Abstract

EFFECT OF UNDENATURED TYPE-II COLLAGEN VERSUS GLUCOSAMINE SULFATE IN PATIENTS WITH KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS: A RANDOMIZED OPEN LABEL STUDY”

Lingineni Bhavya Sree*

ABSTRACT

Background: Undenatured type-II collagen (UC-II) is a nutritional supplement derived from chicken sternum cartilage. Previous studies have shown that Undenatured type II collagen (UC-II) is effective in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and preliminary human and animal trials have shown it to be effective in treating osteoarthritis (OA). The aim of our Randomized study is to compare the effectiveness of Undenatured type-II collagen (UC-II) and Glucosamine sulphate (GS) when used concomitantly with Etodolac in both the groups in the management of knee Osteoarthritis. Materials and Methods: We performed our study in a single centre by including Seventy patients who are diagnosed with knee Osteoarthritis and this study population is randomly distributed into two groups. One group have been received Undenatured type II collagen plus Etodolac (n=35) and other group have received Glucosamine sulphate plus Etodolac (n=35). Each patient was examined at baseline and at days 30, 60 and 90. The primary endpoint was the change in total Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) Scores from the baseline and at 30, 60 and 90 days for both UC-II and GS group were recorded. Results: After 3 months of treatment, significant improvements compared to baseline were reported in joint pain and function in both treated groups. Specifically, although both the treatments reduced the WOMAC Score, treatment with UC-II plus Etodolac reduced the WOMAC Scores by 41% as compared to 20% in Glucosamine sulfate plus Etodolac group after 90 days. Similar results were obtained for the VAS scores, treatment with UC-II plus Etodolac reduced the VAS Scores by 43% as compared to 28% in GS plus Etodolac group after 90 days. No product related adverse events were observed during the study. Conclusion: All the results suggest that Undenatured type-II collagen treatment combined with Etodolac is superior to Glucosamine sulfate plus Etodolac group for symptomatic treatment of patients with knee osteoarthritis. Thus UC-II supplementation showed an enhancement in daily activities suggesting an improvement in overall quality of life in patients receiving UC-II.
