ABSTRACT
Kshar is a herbo-mineral Ayurvedic formulation which is alkaline in nature. In Ayurveda classics there are several plants mentioned as a source of Kshar. The characteristics feature and nature of Kshar kalpana depends on the raw material and manufacturing process. Very limited work has been done related to pharmaceutical and analytical study, standard manufacturing procedure of Kshar kalp. This review article summarizes the evidence based physico-chemical characteristics of Kshar kalpana. To summarize various online published research articles on pharmaceutical and analytical study of commonly used Kshar kalp in Ayurveda, due to herbal origin of these alkaline preparations with different organic compounds have highest pH value, and higher yield in triple washing and its characterized by organoleptic
characters, physico-chemical parameters, qualitative chemical tests, and various modern analytical techniques, viz., Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) analysis, Energy dispersive X- ray spectroscopy (EDS), Field emission gun scanning microscope (FEG-SEM) etc.
Keywords: Ayurveda, standardization, Fourier transform infrared, X- Ray Diffraction.
