ABSTRACT

A good set of white, clean teeth with proper dentition, coupled with good breath, is a beauty, which is guarded jealously through oral hygiene and dental care. Gum inflammation and loss of teeth destroy this beauty and affect mastication and nutrition. Odoriferous breath can be public embarrassment. To combat inflammation of gum, inflammation and degeneration of the tissues that attach teeth (first cause of losing teeth worldwide), and bad breath, many toothpastes contain mastic resin exuded by mastic tree or meniscus stems when cut on the surface or the decoction of the young stems and leaves of the mastic tree. There is no report as yet regarding the incorporation of mastic leaves in dental powder for brushing the teeth for oral hygiene and for the treatment of the above-named dental problems. This study, therefore, sought to prepare a dental powder, using mastic leaves as the active ingredient. Assessors adjudged the product excellent and preferable to other dental powder preparations in the market. The study recommends the formulation of policies to stimulate mass planting of mastic tree and patronage of dental powder containing mastic leaves.
