ABSTRACT

Sheetapitta is a Tridoshajanya Vikara manifested on the skin keeping the blood (rakta dhatu) as its base & characterized by utsedha, mandala, kandu, toda, jwara, daha. Its symptoms can be correlated with those of Urticaria. It is one of the commonest skin problems that dermatologists come across their clinical practice. Nettle rash, weal’s, hives are the various popular names of this disorder. Urticaria lesions are itchy, red papules and plaques of variable size that arise suddenly and last for many hours. Ultimate cause of urticaria is release of histamine from mast cells granules, but there are large number of stimuli that can do this. The existing modern medicines give no complete relief and reoccurrence is quite common. Panchakarma provides a better and permanent relief form this nagging skin problem. panchakarma modalities like vamana, virechana, along with shamana chikitsa are very effective in treating sheetapitta and are safe in long term use.
