LEPAN KARMA IN AYURVEDA: A REVIEW

ABSTRACT
A huge overview of the topical applications in the title of Lepa kalpana mentioned in Ayurveda texts both as the Chikitsa (therapeutic effect) of various skin disorders and for beautification of skin (cosmetic effect). Lepa Kalpana is a type of Kalka Kalpana.[1] Kalka & Lepa, both are the same, only purpose for which it is used, specifies its classification. The drugs used in the form of a paste for external application are known as Lepa.[2] Acharya Sushruta has explained the efficiency and importance of Lepa Kalpana very well by giving a nice example. By pouring water over burning house, the fire is extinguished instantly; in the same manner the Lepa pacifies the aggravated local
Dosha by local application.[3] Similarly, it has actions like Shodhana, Utsadana, Ropana & Prahladana.[4]
