Abstract

ARTICLE REVIEW: MANUFACTURING METHODS OF CARBAMAZEPIN'S SOLID DISPERSION

Sulistiani Kembari*, Rina Wahyuni and Yeni Novita Sari

ABSTRACT

Solubility is one of the physicochemical properties that play an essential role in determining the bioavailability of drug preparations, drug absorption, and dissolution. Carbamazepine drug has low solubility in water, and the dissolution rate is not reasonable, so it affects its bioavailability. To increase bioavailability, carbamazepine can be formulated as a solid dispersion. Preparation of solid dispersions is a standard method that can be used to improve the solubility of carbamazepine in water. The data collection was sourced from ScienceDirect, Reseacrhgate, Google Scholar, and trusted journal publishers from 2000-2020. This review article discusses carbamazepine solid dispersion preparation methods such as melting method, spray-congealing, solvent evaporation, co-grinding, kneading, hot-melt extrusion, supercritical, and everted gut sac. It can increase the dissolution rate of carbamazepine drugs. The practical method of carbamazepine preparation is a spray-congealing method using Gelucire polymer with a ratio of 50:13 to increase the dissolution rate by 112%.

Keywords: Carbamazepin, BCS II, Solid dispersion, dissolution rate.
