ESTROGENIC AND ANTIESTROGENIC ACTIVITY OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF MIRABILIS JALAPA LINN IN FEMALE ALBINO WISTAR RATS

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the estrogenic and antiestrogenic activity of ethanolic extract of Mirabilis jalapa linn in female wistar rats. The uterine weight, vaginal opening, vaginal cornification, the diameter of the uterus and thickness of endometrium of all rats were observed. The Extracts showed significant increase in Uterine weight, diameter of the Uterus, and the thickness of the endometrium. When compared to control. The Extracts of 200mg and 400 mg/kg of Mirabilis jalapa Linn induced vaginal opening whereas control showed closed vaginal opening. The number of Cornified cells in the Vaginal smears were considerably high in 200 and 400 mg/kg of Ethanolic extract of Mirabilis jalapa Linn when compared to control. From the results it showed that the ethanolic extract showed significant estrogenic activity when given alone, but w ethinyl estradiol it showed antiestrogenic activity. The result of present study indicates that the ethanolic extract of Mirabilis jalapa have significant antifertility activity.
