ABSTRACT
Orally Disintegrating Tablet (ODT) disintegrates rapidly in saliva, usually within seconds, without the need to take water. Telmisartan is an orally active non-peptide angiotensin II antagonist that acts on the AT1 receptor subtype. It is given to treat essential hypertension. An attempt was made to prepare Oro-dispersible tablet of Telmisartan by wet granulation method. The superdisintegrant Sodium Starch Glycolate (SSG) and natural superdisintegrant (Pumpkin Starch) were used in varying concentrations. Telmisartan was used as the active drug and superdisintegrants like SSG and naturally extracted starch were used for the formulations. A total of 4 formulations were formulated and were designed by wet granulation method. All the formulation were subjected for different types of evaluation parameters: Pre-compression study such as Angle of repose, Bulk density, Tapped density, Carr’s compressibility index, Hausner’s ratio & Post-compression studies such as Weight variation, Hardness, Thickness, In-vitro disintegration time, In-vitro dissolution and Drug content. Pre and Post compression parameters were studied and all the batches showed favourable disintegration time from 9-14 secs and cumulative % release from 96-102 %. Increased amount of superdisintegrants decreased wetting time. Superdisintegrants were effective in lowering disintegration time. Formulation of ODTs of Telmisartan was possible using natural and synthetic disintegrants.
