Syed Mohammed Shafiulla* and M. Siddaiah

ABSTRACT

The plant Amaranthus spinosus, commonly known as the spiny amaranth[1] plant belongs to family Amaranthaceae has many medicinal properties. The present study is designed to evaluate the anti migraine potential of indigenous herbal plant Amaranthus spinosus in nitroglycerine induced migraine model. Some of the herbal plants have many many medicinal values. Different solvent extractions like Chloroform, Ethyl acetate, Ethanol, Aqueous were prepared by Maceration process. The collected fresh plant leaves were shade dried completely and ground into powder with mechanical grinder. Extraction was done by maceration process, the preliminary phytochemical analysis of Chloroform, ethyl acetate, Ethanol and aqueous revealed the presence of Alkaloids, Carbohydrates, glycosides phenolic compound, flavonoids, tannin and proteins. The Ethanolic extract of Amaranthus spinosus shows more phenolic, flavonoid, tannin contents. Presence of phenolic, flavanoid contents reflect the medicinal properties of these plants. Migraine is the major problem in this busy life. Nitroglycerine is used in this study for inducing the migraine and sumatriptan is used as the standard drug. Nitroglycerine single dose is not sufficient to cause the same effect as in chronic migraineurs. So, in this study repeated doses of nitroglycerine is used for inducing chronic migraine. 30 minutes after inducing migraine standard, plant extract dose were given to the allotted groups. After dosing the behavioral assessment was done to to evaluate the migraine potential, the parameters like RGS scores, Tail flick test, Dark and light chamber test, Forced swim test, Elevated plus maze, body weights were evaluated.
