ABSTRACT
Ama is the unique concept of Ayurveda. Majority of the endogenous diseases actually begin with the formation of ama, which has tremendous capacity to vitiate the dosha, and thereby disturbing thedhatu-samya. The person with ama presents with balabhramsa, gourava, alasya, aruchi, apakthi, klama etc. This reviewing is done to do the conceptual analysis of ama. Ama can be described as - raw, uncooked, unripe, immature, undigested, incompletely oxidised/metabolised or as a poisonous substance. Ama has a very wide range of applicability. Moreover it is the base of Ayurvedic management of disease. Without considering the stage, ama, the treatment line may become a waste one. That means it is not mere an undigested food, but affects each and every cells of body by affecting kayagni, bhuthagni, dathvagni etc.In these days the lifestyle shows more chances for amaja roga. Hence a rethinking and analysis of ama is necessary.
