REVIEW ARTICLE ON ARSHOGHNA MAHAKASHAYA

ABSTRACT
Plants are the exclusive source of the drugs for the treatment of the many diseases. Acharya Charaka classified the herbs into 50 groups of herbs, Mahakashya (dravya with similar action). Each groups included 10 herbs according to their selective action, so 50 *10 = 500 total herbs. Out of these 50 Mahakashaya, Arshoghna Mahakashaya is the 12th number of Mahakashaya described in chapter 4th shadvirechnashatashriya adhyaya of sutra sthana for the management of Arsha roga (haemorrhoid). Arshoghana Mahakashaya contain 10 drugs which are effective in relieving pain and symptoms of Arsha when used either in single or in formulations. Importance of this Mahakashaya increasing day by day due to luxurious life style of present time, as people are not able to follow rules of proper aahar and vihar which ultimately result into vitiation of Agni. As per Ayurveda major cause of various disease is Agnimandya. This article it is an attempt to elaborate the concept of Arshoghana mahakashya, and its mode of action as per it‟s Rasa, Guna, Virya, Vipaka, that are mentioned in Ayurvedic text as safe for management of Arsh roga.
