ABSTRACT
Background: Assessmtent of optic disc parameter specialy C/D (cup to disc) ratio is an important approach for detecting structural damage in patient with glaucoma and manyneurological disease. Imaging techniques such as optical coherence tomography are gaining popularity in the assessment of optic disc cup. Objective: To determine normal values of optic disc parameters in eyes measured by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) in a sample of iraqi population. Material and Methods: A cross sectional study of 205 normal eyes from 121 subject aged from (18-80 years) at Al Sadr medical city/Kufa/Najaf was conducted to find the optic disc parameter (optic disc area, cup area, cup to disc area ratio, rim area, linear and vertical cup to disc ratio) using 3D-OCT 2000 (Topcon Inc.). Data were collected and evaluated statistically using the independent T and Chi square tests and a P- value of less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Mean values for optic disc parameter on OCT were (2.23 ± 0.49 mm2, 0.69 ± 0.48 mm2,0.37 ± 0.2,1.53 ± 0.48 mm2,0.51 ± 0.17,0.51 ± 0.17)for disc area, cup area, cup to dics ratio ,rim area and linear and vertical CDR respectively. Gender show no significant correlation with the measured optic disc parameter. But there was significant correlation between the optic disc parameter (except disc area ) and IOP level being above or below 16 mmHg signifing that even within normal ranges of IOP the C / D ratio and the cup diameter tends to be larger as the IOP rises. Conclusion: Our calculated parameters didn't deviate far from other studies. IOP is a major factor that effect optic disc parameter even within normal ranges
