COMBINED EFFECT OF LIFE STYLE MODIFICATIONS AND YOGA IN PATIENTS OF BORDERLINE HYPERLIPIDEMIA: A PRE-POST INTERVENTIONAL STUDY

ABSTRACT
Hyperlipidemia (Fart Tashahhum fi al- Dam) is the elevation in lipids and/or lipoproteins in the blood. It has become a global concern for cardiovascular diseases, mainly when it is associated with risk factors like obesity. It makes the patients susceptible to accelerated atherosclerosis leading to cardiovascular diseases and stroke which are one of the major causes of premature deaths due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Therefore, early detection and treatment are imperative to reduce cardiovascular events and premature death. As far as the concept of Hyperlipidemia in Unani Medicine is concerned, physicians of Unani Medicine described Hyperlipidemia as Ghilzat-al- Dam due to predominance of Balgham (phlegm) which causes narrowing of vessels (Tazayyuq al- Uruq) which effect the supply of Rooh to the vital organs like heart and brain resulting the disease of these organs. Therefore a clinical study on borderline hyperlipidemia was performed to know the combined effect of lifestyle modifications and Yoga practices. In this clinical study there is a significant decrease was seen in serum cholesterol, LDL, Triglyceride and Body Mass Index due to combined effects of lifestyle modifications and Yoga practices.
